Hawkesbury Football Club takes over GIANTS Stadium after club flooding
Hawkesbury Football Club received a rare chance to train at GIANTS Stadium this week following the devastating flooding of the club's training ground.
For an hour on Monday, the team trained like the pros, taking over the stadium to run some laps and meet GWS GIANTS stars Stephen Coniglio and Toby Greene, thanks to a joint community initiative by Sydney Showground and the GWS GIANTS following the recent flooding of the team's ground and clubhouse.
To assist in the recovery of the football club, GWS GIANTS also donated the team a $5,000 cheque to help them bounce back.
"The club has been hit by floods twice in 12 months, and this time the clubhouse was underwater," said Hawkesbury Football Club Team secretary, Geana Smith.
"To train at a professional stadium and meet some of the players is a great experience for the team - this is something we never thought the guys would be able to do."
With the extra funding, Hawkesbury Football club will be able to purchase new equipment and uniforms, which will allow them to leave the financial stress behind as they kick-start the season.
"We are a tight-knit family club, and I have no doubt we'll bounce back with the support of our local community and GWS GIANTS support," Gail said.
With the AFL season well underway, the GWS GIANTS will verse the Gold Coast Suns at their next home game at GIANTS Stadium on Saturday, April 2.
