ENGIE Stadium and Sydney Showground will now save over 2,200 single-use cups per event thanks to an exciting three-year partnership with sustainable aluminium cup provider, WOSUP, which will see the upgrade of all cups for draught beverage options at the venue.
Having transitioned to reusable cups back in 2019, the venue has continued to explore evolving food and beverage sustainability options and embarked on a trial with WOSUP late last year to determine the suitability of their product for use in a world-class venue.
From this trial, WOSUP have confirmed that Sydney Showground and ENGIE Stadium have saved over 42,000 single-use cups since November.
Made from lightweight aluminium, WOSUP is a premium, durable and reusable cup that not only helps reduce single-use plastic at live events but also helps to keep drinks colder for longer, making for a better beverage experience.
Sydney Showground and ENGIE Stadium Director of Food and Beverage, James Farr said he is excited to partner with WOSUP and embark on the important mission of changing the future of food and beverage service at large events.
“We are thrilled to announce this exciting three-year partnership with WOSUP and to take real action towards making our venue and live events more sustainable,” Farr said.
“The new WOSUP cups will be used across our venue for all draught beverage options, which will not only help to reduce waste but also provide an improved beverage experience for our guests.
“At Sydney Showground and ENGIE Stadium, we take great pride in doing our part as a venue to make live events more sustainable.”
In addition to consumer benefits, Sydney Showground General Manager Darryl Jeffrey said the business saw an uptick in beverage sales from the switch.
“We were extremely pleased with the results from our first AFL season utilising WOSUP Cups. Whilst our primary goal was the eradication of single use plastic from the stadium, we also pleasingly experienced an increased spend of 51% on consumer beverages against our forecast figures.”
How does it work? Patrons or staff place used cups in clearly marked single-source collection bins around the venue. The cups are then sorted, cleaned and repacked for use at the next event.
Over the past two years, Sydney Showground has made considerable upgrades across its venue to reduce event emissions, including lighting and air-conditioning upgrades, which halved CO2 emissions on event days. Sydney Showground has also partnered with event carbon offset organisation, CLIMA, to help its clients better understand their impact and make changes.
